Mission Arts Council welcomes University of Fraser Valley for art exhibit

‘UFV at the Mac’ received almost 40 submissions with Nathan Davis taking top prize for a sculpture

The UFV at the MAC art exhibit returned to Mission for the second time with almost 40 submissions.

The Mission Arts Council (MAC) started the exhibit in late 2021 with the help of the University of Fraser Valley School of Creative Arts. MAC program coordinator Mackenzie Widdows says submissions more than doubled from the last UFV at the MAC event.

“I had a lot of fun going down to UFV and riling up the students to get them to participate,” Widdows said. “It keeps getting bigger and bigger.”

Gallery ambassador Teri Phaneuf awarded UFV student Nathan Davis with Best In Show for his sculpture, “Void”, that used used fabric, embroidery, wire and clay.

“Centuries of systemic destruction and erasure of Jewish society across Europe have left behind voids in the fabric of European society,” Davis wrote in his artist statement. “Entire communities are absent from humankind’s collective memory. With this sculpture, I sought to examine the gaps antisemitism has left in the history books, archives, and art galleries of the world, and to give identity and humanity to these empty voids within the grand narrative of European history.”

The exhibition runs until Feb. 11th and can be viewed at The Rock Family Gallery from Tuesday to Saturday from 12 p.m to 4 p.m. Next week, the MAC will host Derek Hill’s Blast From the Past exhibit starting Feb. 14, featuring a collection of old photos.
