West My Friend performs Friday, Aug. 18 at the Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series in Mission.

The Envision Financial Twilight Concert Series enters the home stretch with just a handful of concerts remaining. The free series takes place Wednesdays and Fridays at 7 p.m. in Fraser River Heritage Park.

On Friday, Aug. 18, the series welcomes West My Friend from their home in Victoria.

Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, West My Friend has an acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies that challenge the conventions of popular music.

The band features pure and thrillingly elastic vocals with catchy arrangements of bass, guitar, mandolin, and accordion that draw from jazz, classical, folk, and pop influences.

West My Friend is inspired by artists such as Owen Pallett, Joanna Newsom, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, and the Punch Brothers, and is forged from a sonically adventurous acoustic music scene on Canada’s west coast, proving to be a key part of a new generation of grassroots folk music.

Doja hits the stage on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

This band – based in Chilliwack and Victoria – was the winner of the inaugural Fraser Valley Music Awards in the “alternate” category.

The band is composed of guitarist/lead vocalist Ricky Lawrie, drummer/vocalist Brad Desjardins, and bassist Stephen Kalkman.

Starting off as friends in the first grade, the trio began playing music together at the age of 12.

Doja’s first synthesis as a band came in the form of their first EP, Set and Setting, which caused them to finally choose a name and kick off being a true “band.”

After a few years of gigging throughout B.C., winning various showcases and gaining some airplay, the band recorded and released their first full-length album, It’s Me, You.

The concerts take place rain or shine.

The Log Cabin Concession is operated by the Catholic Women’s League, with all the proceeds going back into the community for various projects including SARA For Women.
