Mission RCMP responded to a collision at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Taulbut Street (pictured) where an 18-year-old on an electric scooter was struck by a car.

An 18-year-old riding an electric scooter was struck by a car at a Mission intersection last week.

According to Mission RCMP’s weekly “Community Connection” crime recap, the collision occurred at roughly 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 26  at the intersection of 11th Avenue and Taulbut Street near Centennial Park.

Police say the man rode into the intersection without stopping and was struck by a passing vehicle that could not stop in time.

“The male – who was not wearing a helmet – was not seriously injured, but did experience concussion-like symptoms, and was transported to hospital,” police said.

Police say early investigation indicates the car wasn’t speeding and the scooter crossed the road unexpectedly.

“With an increasing number of youth using electric scooters, Mission RCMP encourage parents to remind their children of the basics of safe operation, and to always wear a helmet.”

RCMP said the investigation is still ongoing.

The incident was one of 348 calls for service for the Mission detachment from February 24 to March 3.

RCMP responded to a pair of impaired collisions last weekend. Drivers from each incident received 90-day driving prohibitions and 30-day vehicle impounds.

On Friday (Feb. 28), a Mission man driving a grey Toyota Matrix rear-ended another vehicle on Lougheed Highway near Haig Street at approximately 6:15 p.m.

An officer attended and immediately noted symptoms of impairment on the driver of the Matrix.

Police say the officer noted symptoms of impairment on the Matrix driver and he failed two roadside screening device tests.

The following morning (March 1) at 4 a.m.,  a local called police after seeing a white Toyota Corolla in the ditch on Lougheed Highway between Manson Street and Coleman Street.

The woman driving the Corolla of that vehicle also failed a roadside screening device test, RCMP say.

No one was injured as a result of either collision.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old from Aldergrove was spotted speeding in a Ford Mustang on Sylvester Road in Hatzic last weekend.

According to the release, Mission RCMP was conducting patrols in the area of the Hatzic Prairie after receiving reports that ongoing illegal dumping was occurring late at night.

The officer stopped the Mustang and discovered driver was committing “numerous other infractions” under the Motor Vehicle Act.

“The youth – whose driving behaviour caught the attention of police in various Lower Mainland municipalities recently – was issued multiple tickets,” police said.
