Eight residents are displaced after a house fire on 8667 Dewdney Trunk Road on Wednesday night (Jan. 3).
Mission Fire Rescue Service (MFRS) assistant chief Ian Glasgow says firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze but significant damage to the building will leave the occupants displaced for some time.
At approximately 8:30 p.m., MFRS responded to a report of a basement fire to residents near Cade Barr.
Crews arrived to heavy smoke conditions coming from the basement of the two-storey building. Six fire apparatus and approximately 30 firefighters attended the call, along with emergency support services.
Initial reports indicated one person was unaccounted for, leading to a sizable Mission RCMP presence. However, crews searched and discovered no occupants were in the residence.
“Visibility was poor and the fire attack was difficult because of the heavy smoke but crews did a great job of quickly extinguishing the fire,” Glasgow said.
The fire started in the basement and firefighters needed “an extensive overhaul” to fully extinguish it. The blaze was mostly contained to the basement with some smoke damage upstairs.
The eight occupants were looked after by the MFRS emergency support services team.
MFRS will conduct a fire investigation on Thursday (Jan. 4). The blaze is not considered suspicious at this time.
