The Mission Record sent four questions to each of the candidates in the Abbotsford-Mission riding. Here are their replies.
Pam Alexis
NDP (incumbent)
1. A lack of physicians impacted Mission’s emergency room this summer. What does the future of Mission Memorial Hospital look like for you and your party?
Mission needs a fully functioning Emergency Room (ER) to effectively serve our community. With two ER physicians hired in August and September, I am hopeful that we can prevent further closures. However, staff recruitment remains a challenge in the Fraser Valley, and we are making significant strides to address this issue.
As our population continues to grow, Mission Memorial Hospital will need to expand its services to meet increasing demand. Ensuring that our healthcare facilities are adequately equipped and staffed is essential for the well-being of our community.
The focus on improving and maintaining services at Mission Memorial reflects the priorities of many residents. We are committed to creating a future where everyone in Mission has access to the healthcare they need, when they need it.
2. What do you view as the biggest need for education in Mission? What is your party’s approach to inclusive education?
The biggest need for education in Mission is to ensure we have adequate and safe space for our growing student population, especially with 100 new students arriving this past September. Prioritizing facilities will help accommodate this influx and support effective learning environments.
I’m optimistic about the recent opening of the new teacher training facility, which will enhance teacher retention and attract talent to our schools. The BC NDP is committed to inclusive education, ensuring that all students feel welcomed and safe. We believe in fostering environments where every child can thrive, regardless of their background or abilities.
3. What can the province do to increase affordable housing in Mission?
As a member of the BC NDP, I believe the provincial government must play an active role in the creation of affordable housing, especially here in Mission. Our commitment includes increasing the supply of affordable homes through investments in new construction and support for non-profit housing providers. And by putting in place restrictions for short-term rentals like AirBnB, thousands of units have been turned into long-term homes.
We aim to implement stronger rent control measures and tenant protections, ensuring that families can live in stability without fear of displacement. Together, we are tackling the root causes of housing unaffordability, working towards vibrant, inclusive communities where everyone has a place to call home.
4. What will make you an effective MLA and how will this help you serve Mission?
What will make me an effective MLA is my commitment to collaboration and building strong relationships, both in our community and in Victoria. I believe that the best solutions come from listening to diverse voices and fostering teamwork. Engaging with residents and organizations ensures that everyone’s perspectives are considered in decision-making.
My attention to detail allows me to fully understand the nuances of our collective goals, helping me advocate effectively for Mission’s needs. By analyzing problems and gathering input, I can develop comprehensive solutions that reflect our community’s values.
In Victoria, I will work tirelessly to build alliances and ensure our concerns are prioritized. With my focus on collaboration and a detail-oriented approach, I will be a strong advocate for Mission, making sure our voices are heard and our community thrives. Together, we can achieve meaningful progress for a brighter future!
