A 58-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after a workplace incident in Mission on Friday (Oct. 25).

BC Emergency Health Services, Mission Fire Rescue Service (MFRS) and Mission RCMP were called to the 2700 block of Nelson Street after 1 p.m. for a person in need of medical attention.

According to scanner information, the man was trapped under roughly 3,000 pounds of steel.

"Mission fire crews attended a call for a workplace incident at one of our industrial occupancies where a worker suffered crushing-type injuries and was airlifted to hospital," MFRS said in a statement.

Mission RCMP said the man was moving a cart of sheet metal at a warehouse off Gill Avenue when the metal fell on him.  RCMP contacted WorkSafeBC to investigate.

BC Emergency Health Services said paramedics provided emergency medical treatment. The man was transported to a landing zone at Mission Raceway and airlifted to hospital under the care of critical care paramedics.

Police said the injuries were significant but not believed to be life-threatening.
