A new gymnasium is now open at École des Deux-rives in Mission.
According to a news release from the province on Monday (July 29), the gym was constructed with roughly $6.9 million in funding using mass timber for the walls and roof, and light wood frames for the support areas.
The province says the old gym will be converted into extra learning spaces, additional library space, a special education room and a multi-purpose area.
Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique (CSF) board chair Marie-Pierre Lavoie said the new gym represents a major step forward for the Mission community.
"This new space provides our students with much-needed infrastructure. We’re happy to see one of our many court victories realized today and proud to be investing in the future of our families and children by providing them with the facilities they deserve,” Lavoie said.
Education minister Rachna Singh said gyms are a vital part of students’ experience in schools and space for recreational activities.
"I’m so pleased with the contribution this project represents,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, Abbotsford-Mission MLA Pam Alexis said the new gym provides a modern space for education and recreation for students.
