A new 108-unit apartment building is now open on Maple Street, including 11 units of affordable housing.
An open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at the new Maple View Heights Apartments building where tenants began living in January.
Mayor Paul Horn and councillors Carol Hamilton, Jag Gill and Danny Plecas spoke at the ceremony, along with developers and partners in the project.
“In Stó꞉lō tradition, one of the most important things is to look back seven generations and learn and look forward seven generations to what will be good for the people of that generation and I want to think about the context of what we’re doing here today,” Horn said.
“Sure, we’re cutting a ribbon on a building but when you do the job we do what we’re trying to do is create living spaces for the next generation of people.”
Construction on the property began in 2021 and experienced several challenges, including hitting a geyser on the first day of construction.
“We happened to get into this one of the most difficult times in the industry but we have persevered and here we are today,” Stream Property Partners co-founder Hans Edstrand said.
The project was partially crowd-funded through the “addy” platform.
Stream Property Partners received $1.7 million from over 3,000 Canadians to support the development of the building.
The 11 units pf affordable housing are already leased.
