A passenger dropped a handgun and ran away after an impaired driving traffic stop in Mission last week.

According to a Mission RCMP news release, the detachment’s traffic services officers spotted a black Dodge Ram 1500 after it failed to stop at a stop sign.

The incident occurred on 14th Avenue west of Cedar Street shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 11).

Police say there was a strong smell of cannabis inside the truck and the driver from Alberta was showing signs of marijuana use.

“As the officer stepped toward the back of the vehicle, he saw the passenger put his hand out the window and drop something onto the ground.  When the officer looked, he saw that the passenger had in fact dropped a loaded handgun out of the truck,” RCMP said.

The passenger who dropped the gun ran away as the officer was in the process of arresting him.

RCMP say the driver was issued a driving prohibition due to impairment by cannabis and an investigation into the passenger’s possession of the firearm is ongoing.
