The Valley Huskers are set to kickoff the 2024 campaign with their home opener at Exhibition Stadium on Saturday (July 27).
Following a week-one bye to open the Canadian Junior Football League’s season, the Huskers are eager to get the ball rolling on the new season, according to head coach Bob Reist.
“We’re excited to be hitting the field on Saturday for game day,” he said. “It’s been a good training camp but our guys are eager to suit up against an actual opponent.”
The Huskers will play host to a Kamloops Broncos team coming off a week-one loss to the Westshore Rebels.
The team heads into the new season following a successful 2023 which saw them finish with a record of 7-3 to take third place in the B.C. Conference. This earned the Huskers a playoff berth where they lost a tight game to the Okanagen Sun in the conference semi final.
Despite the tough ending, the team looks to build off their successful regular season, setting some lofty goals for themselves this year.
“We have a talented group and have high expectations of our guys,” said Reist. “We are looking for the progression of our guys and how well they apply coaching in live action.
“I expect a hard-working, disciplined team to be taking the field Saturday against Kamloops.”
The organization is also dedicating Saturday’s season-opener to first responders.
“Saturday is our tribute to first responders,” added Reist. “We’d like to thank all the first responders for the job they do keeping our community healthy and safe.”
Saturday’s game will take place at Exhibition Stadium at 45500 Spadina Ave. with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
