Randy Cairns is seeking another term as a Mission school trustee.

A trustee for the past 13 years, Cairns said he originally ran for office because he values public education and other public services.

“All of these public services are under constant attack of being eroded by wanting to privatize or whatever,” he said.

Mission’s growth is one concern Cairns wants to address.

“I have spoken to MLAs about the urgent need for a new high school in Mission and I will be continuing to advocate for that,” he said.

Cairns is concerned that the aging high school doesn’t have the space or labs needed to meet students’ needs.

“Some of the new courses we have, such as robotics and plasma cutting, the sciences, we are doing it, but we are at a disadvantage compared to other districts who are getting new schools.”

He also wants to lobby for a new elementary school in Hatzic.

“We have a 100 year old school (Hatzic Elementary) that right now is full and there is new development going on around there,” said Cairns.

Those capital projects are needed in Mission and Cairns said they needed to advocate for them in conjunction with whoever is on the new council.

“Hopefully we can get some commitments from the provincial government in the next four years.”
