Police in Abbotsford will now put down their pens and issue roadside electronic tickets for driving offences.
The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) this week joined other police agencies across the province that are already using the new e-ticketing technology.
Officers can now use the technology to swipe a driver’s licence and have the ticket automatically populated with the information on the licence.
The ticket is then printed from the police vehicle, and the information is uploaded directly to ICBC.
Drivers then have the option to pay their e-tickets through an online payment service, PayBC, or continue to use existing payment methods such as in person, by phone or by mail.
Sgt. Desi Sansalone of the APD traffic enforcement unit said the new system allows officers to process tickets more efficiently and with greater accuracy.
“Less administrative time and fewer procedural errors means more time available for enforcement – and more time dedicated to achieving our road safety goals,” he said.
The fines are the same, regardless of whether the driver is issued an electronic or physical ticket.
E-ticketing technology began in March 2018 as a pilot project with five police agencies across B.C. The system will now be implemented by all municipal and RCMP detachments across the province.
