Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to cross Highway 1 over a brand new bridge beginning next week.

The Salton Road pedestrian/cycling crossing will officially open Jan. 23. The bridge links Abbotsford’s UDistrict with central areas of the city and cost $5.67 million to build, with funds coming from the province and the city.

A grand opening will be held next Wednesday at 1 p.m. on the south side of the new bridge. Those who drive to the event can park at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, near the south end of the bridge. In addition to the bridge, the project included separated bike lanes along Salton Road connecting UFV with Marshall Road.

Members of the public will be able to join politicians and dignitaries in crossing the bridge for the first time. Complimentary “Bridge Dog” hot dogs will also be served.
