Accident on forest service road in Mission kills two men

Vehicle went over an embankment on Sunday evening

An accident on a forest service road in Mission claimed the lives of two 21-year-old men on Sunday evening.

Police and the coroners service are investigating after a vehicle went off a forest service road and down an embankment, killing both occupants.

At around 5:30 on Sunday, Mission RCMP responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Norrish Creek Forest Service Road, east of Mission.

Police say a Honda CRV with two occupants had been traveling south on Norrish Creek road, around the four-kilometre mark, when witnesses observed it begin to lose control and fishtail while negotiating a curve in the road.

The vehicle went off the road and plunged approximately 160 feet down an embankment.  Both the driver and passenger died at scene. Due to the location of the vehicle, search and rescue crews were called to assist.

The driver was a resident of Kelowna and the passenger was a resident of Chilliwack.

Police say that the cause of this incident has not been determined, but there is no indication at this time that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor.

There are numerous forest service roads in the Fraser Valley area which are used recreationally by a high number of people, particularly during the summer months.

“Drivers should be mindful that forest service roads are not maintained in the same condition as highways” said Sgt. Shaun Wright.

“All drivers, and inexperienced drivers in particular, must use caution and drive carefully when using forest service roads.”
