A man who was arrested early Friday morning after a break-in at an Abbotsford business had items in his possession that included bear spray, a knife, a slingshot and a hatchet, police say.

But a woman who was with him was able to get away.

Sgt. Judy Bird said Abbotsford police were notified by a security company at about 12:30 a.m. that an alarm had gone off in a business compound near the 330 block of Sumas Way.

Bird said that when officers arrived, they spotted a man and a woman in front of a business, but the couple ran off along the nearby railway tracks when they tried to approach them.

Officers were able to catch the man, and Bird said several items were found beside him, including a backpack that contained the bear spray, hatchet and slingshot, as well as a battery-powered grinder.

The man also had a knife attached to this waist, Bird said.

She said also found by the man were stolen coils of wire – estimated to be worth $500 – that were later returned to the business that had been broken into.

The officers also located two bicycles and another backpack near the business. Bird said the backpack contained bolt cutters, a pipe wrench, pliers and a flashlight.

She said a police dog was deployed but the woman who ran off was not located.

Christopher Grant Lounsbury, 47, has now been charged with obstruction, possession of break-in tools, break-and-enter, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
