There appears to have been gunshots fired involving at least one vehicle on a residential street downtown Chilliwack on Friday afternoon.

A neighbour said they heard vehicles crashing and shots fired some time after noon on a quiet stretch of Reece Avenue between Young Road and Cook Street.

And another neighbour may have captured a victim or suspect car fleeing the scene.

Chilliwack RCMP were out in force on Reece after the report of shots fired, which occurred just a few hundred metres away from a homicide on Thursday.

Just after 1 p.m. police descended on the road and began looking for clues. There were no updates to offer by 4 p.m. as it was in the early stages of the investigation, according to Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mike Rail.

Police were on the scene closely examining the grass boulevard and the roadway at the corner of Reece and Cook Street.

An officer photographed evidence marked by at least a dozen small yellow tags in the middle of the road.

One neighbour told The Progress she heard three distinct gun shots before police arrived.

Meanwhile, about 500 metres away, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was still on the scene of the homicide where 25-year-old Zacharia Cross was killed Thursday.

Cpl. Rail said there was no reason to think the incidents were linked.

“There is absolutely no evidence at this time to indicate any link between the two,” he said.

A piece of evidence that will be sure to interest investigators is a clip of security footage from a resident with numerous cameras facing Reece and Williams Street just a few blocks to the east of where the shots were fired.

In the short clip from two camera angles, three distinct popping sounds can be heard after which a white sedan with a smashed front end is seen turning south onto Williams Street from Reece.
