You know you lead a busy criminal life when you’re being sentenced for release order breaches while serving a five year jail sentence. Such is life for Chilliwack prolific offender William Rodney Bishop, who appeared by video at the Chilliwack Law Courts Tuesday (Aug. 1) to have two more items added to his lengthy criminal record.
Bishop pleaded guilty to one count of breaching a release order and one count of willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, dating back to May 27, 2022.
B.C. Provincial Judge Kristen Mundstock approved a joint submission from Crown and defence that tags Bishop with 30 days for each offence. There’s no added jail time for the 34-year-old, however. The new sentences will be served concurrently (at the same time) as the five-year sentence he received in June for federal drug trafficking and firearms charges.
These latest charges stem from a traffic stop initiated by an RCMP officer, who pulled Bishop over and asked him to get out of the vehicle. Instead of doing that, Bishop told the officer to f-off, started his vehicle and took off. When the officer caught up to Bishop and arrested him, he wasn’t wearing the electronic monitoring ankle bracelet he was supposed to use as part of a previous release order. He was at the police station and the bracelet was ‘pinged’ to the Fairfield Island area.
Bishop’s legal troubles are expected to continue next year. He’s scheduled to go to trial March 14-15 on three more drug trafficking charges and a breach of release order. His next appearance on that matter is a two-day voire dire hearing set for Feb. 20, 2024. A voire dire is used to determine what evidence is admissible at trial.
