Abbotsford’s city hall and police headquarters are each in line for significant renovations that will cost the city a combined $1.75 million.
The renovation of city hall is expected to cost about $850,000 and alter three of the building’s six storeys.
The city put out a call last week, saying it wants to renovate the floors “in order to reallocate space, improve customer service and improve operational alignment of working groups.”
The project will affect 9,128 square feet of space, and will alter wall layouts, doors, and infrastructure like electrical and communications connections, lighting, and HVAC systems. Construction is expected to take place between May and August and wrap up by the end of the summer.
City hall was constructed in 1982, and a spokesperson said it will provide better access for those seeking help with development applications, bylaw services and engineering issues.
Meanwhile, the Abbotsford Police Department is also looking for a company to renovate its headquarters.
That project has a budget of $900,000, and includes both interior work and “a minor exterior addition.”
Abbotsford Police Sgt. Judy Bird said the force has been facing a significant space crunch for several years. With dispatch work now being done in Vancouver, the renovation will focus on repurposing that area for more office space.
