Roger Mathurin died at Mission Institution on April 14, after being incarcerated for 49 years.

He had been convicted of second-degree murder, manslaughter and other offences in 1973, and was serving an indeterminate sentence when he died, according to a press release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

CSC said Mathurin’s next of kin have been notified of his death, and as with all inmate deaths, the circumstances will be reviewed by a coroner.

The release does not say whether the death was of natural causes.
