The city website (mission.ca) has also listed tips for keeping cool:
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- If you have a window air conditioner, place it in a room you can close off from the rest of your home. This room can be your cooling-off space and try to stay in there as much as possible during the hottest parts of the day.
- Schedule outdoor activities and exercise only during the coolest time of the day (avoid between 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. as temperatures and sun are at their highest.
- Ask a friend, loved one, or neighbour to check in with you.
- Keep a close eye on the infants and children in your care.
- Take cool or tepid baths, foot baths, and showers.
- Wear a wet shirt or apply damp towels to your skin.
- Keep your home cooler by shading the windows from the outside using awnings or shutters or from the inside using curtains or blinds or even cardboard.
- Visit one of Mission’s Cooling Centres, as noted above.
- Stay with friends or family who have air conditioning or a basement.
