The District of Mission will give the annual Soapbox Derby $4

The annual Mission Soapbox Derby will receive funding from the District of Mission.

Three weeks ago, derby president Keith Hine appeared before council to ask for $4,200, the same amount the derby received the previous year. However, Hine admitted that he missed the deadline to apply for financial aid and hoped council would make an exception and grant his application request.

He said the funding is desperately needed and without it the race is “in jeopardy.”

At last week’s council meeting, his request for funds was approved.

A report from staff stated “the district has historically provided financial assistance to the Mission Soapbox Derby Association by way of a community event grant every year. The Soapbox Derby is a long standing and much anticipated community event that relies on its sponsors for funding and donations to keep going.”

Staff recommended providing funding assistance from the district’s $35,000 contingency budget and council agreed.

The 2017 contingency budget now has a remaining balance of $30,800.
