The city of Abbotsford has issued a ‘Do Not Use Water (Flush Only) Advisory for areas in the Sumas Prairie hit hard by flooding.

This advisory replaces the previous boil water advisory issued on Nov. 18.

The areas affected include: Angus Campbell Road to the west, Highway 1 to the north, the Chilliwack/Abbotsford border to the east, the Canada/US boarder and Old Yale Road to the south.

It is being put in place due to continued uncontrollable water main breaches that could allow surface water to enter the drinking water system. Until such time that breaches are contained and water quality is verified through testing, this advisory will remain active and is expected to be in place for several days.

Water in the aforementioned areas can only be used for flushing toilets and is not to be used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing food or dishes, making infant formula or bathing.

No other areas of the Abbotsford water system are affected by this event and the water remains safe to drink.

This notice remains in effect until another public notice is issued advising that the notice has been amended or may be rescinded. The city of Abbotsford will issue notification when water quality has been confirmed and when you can once again drink the tap water.

It is strongly recommended to boil water before drinking and use boiled or bottled water for cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing food or dishes and making infant formula. Avoid bathing young children in a bathtub and use a handheld shower if possible.

Water should be boiled for at least one minute and preferably done with a kettle.
