The eastern Fraser Valley is staying close to 300 new cases a week, but other parts of the Fraser Health region are seeing a boom in new COVID-19 cases.

Between Feb. 12 and Feb. 18, Fraser East saw 286 new cases of COVID-19. This is down slightly from the 317 cases from the week before, but in line with the average number of weekly cases for the last month. Fraser South is also seeing a relative plateau in its cases, going from a low of 710 new cases in mid-January to 764 new cases this past week.

Fraser North, however, has seen massive increases in its case numbers.

Fraser North, which covers communities around Maple Ridge, the Tri-Cities and Burnaby, has gone from a low of 317 new cases in the beginning of February to 649 new cases in the past week. It’s now seeing around 100 new cases a day, compared to only 50 at the beginning of the month.

This week’s increase in positive test results has moved Fraser North into the top spot for Fraser Health’s daily rate of new cases per 100,000 people, but all three regions are in close quarters.

Last week, Fraser East was seeing the highest rate of cases in the Fraser Valley. It has gone down from 15 daily cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people to around 14 new cases per 100,000. Fraser South is also seeing around 14 new cases per 100,000 people each day, and Fraser North is seeing just over 14 new cases per 100,000 people. This is up from only 10 new cases per 100,000 people the week before.

Last week, Fraser East had the third highest daily rate of COVID-19 in the province. That trend continues this week, as all of Fraser Health is now sitting around 14 new cases each day.

The only other health service delivery area with a higher daily rate is the Northwest, which is seeing nearly 26 cases per 100,000 people each day. The next closest to Fraser Health is the Northeast, which is seeing nearly 13 cases per 100,000 people.

Fraser Health is currently responsible for about half of the province’s new cases each day, and has half of the B.C.’s active cases. Since the start of the pandemic, 725 people have died of COVID-19 in Fraser Health — more than half of the 1,327 deaths the province has seen as a whole.
