A fire on the roof of Edwin S. Richards Elementary School has been deemed suspicious by Mission Fire/Rescue Service.

A passerby noticed flames and black smoke coming from the Cherry Avenue school shortly after 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly, and according to Chief Ian Fitzpatrick, the damage was minor, and no smoke penetrated the school.

Fire investigators say the blaze was intentionally set, and they found an air conditioning unit's filter had been removed and ignited.

The file has been turned over to the RCMP.
