Mission Fire Rescue Service takes part in national Fire prevention Week every year.
But this year, its members decided to “change things up” by organizing the Fire Life Safety Fair.
“We really wanted to change things up and invite the community to see our whole department, whereas we normally hold the event at one fire station,” said Ian Glasgow, assistant chief, fire prevention. “We felt that a grand tour was the best way to go about doing that; but we were a little nervous about how the community would respond to the change to our usual Life Safety Fair, which is always a well-attended and successful event.”
In the end, there was a large turnout with good weather and an ability for each station to showcase, to the community members who live closest to them, what they do, how they do it, and where they are.
“As a community event, it was pretty close to perfect: the kids loved the ‘explosion’ (kitchen fire safety demonstration) that was the Fire Station 2 kitchen fire prop, and Station 3 was another big success with the kids, with the auto extrication display,” said Glasgow. “We heard great things about each stop on the grand tour, so I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be doing this again.”
