Mission drivers have more poor driving conditions to look forward to after a week of already slippery roads.

After over 15 cm of snow fell on Tuesday (Dec. 19), Mission RCMP says the area suffered a rise in fender benders.

“There certainly has been an uptick in vehicles being stuck and minor collisions as a result of the inclement weather,” Mission RCMP’s Jason Raaflaub said. “There were several collisions, for the most part minor in nature and there have been no vehicle fatalities reported in the Mission area as a result of the snowfall.”

James Street was closed between First and Second Avenue as the Fraser Valley was hit with wintry weather. City of Mission trucks have been busy throughout the week sanding and salting roads, and clearing parking spaces downtown.

“Some of the roads leading north from First Avenue were closed as a result [of the snow], and streets like Stave Lake and Wren continue to be challenging for vehicles, especially those that are not equipped for the snow and ice,” Raaflaub said. “Until conditions improve, the Mission RCMP would like to remind drivers to stay off the roads unless it’s necessary to travel and please slow down and use caution if you do need to travel.”

Another winter storm warning for the Fraser Valley was issued by Environment Canada on Thursday. Mission can expect more inclement weather from Thursday evening through Christmas Eve.

The forecast is calling for 15-25 cm of snow for the Fraser Valley. The full gauntlet of heavy snow, freezing rain, high winds, blowing snow and windchill near minus 25 is predicted.

Drivers can expect reduced visibility and ice to build-up and cause slippery surfaces, according to Environment Canada.
