Highway 7 may be returning to a sense of normalcy today.

B.C. Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said Highway 7 will be open to general traffic with no restrictions later Monday (Dec. 6) afternoon.

Highway 7 is currently open for essential travel only between Glasgow Avenue in Mission and Ross Road east of Hope with checkpoints in place throughout. Travellers between Mission and Hope have weathered a variety of restrictions as the province works to repair roads and give aid to those who lost businesses and homes due to catastrophic flooding throughout the Fraser Valley.

Nearly three weeks ago, in the thick of flooding along Highway 7, two major landslides – one west of Agassiz near Harrison Mills and the other east of Hope – stranded hundreds of travellers. The province estimates more than 300 people and nearly 30 animals were rescued along the highway, brought to a shelter in Agassiz to rest and recover.

More to come.
