A hiker who fell more than 45 feet had to be rescued via helicopter Friday afternoon.

Mission Search and Rescue volunteers responded at about noon to Nicomen Mountain where the individual was hiking with two others, all in their early 20s. After the man fell, one of his friends hiked out to call for help, which brought SAR members from Mission, Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

Mission SAR members administered first aid once they reached the hiker, and then used a long-line technique – where the rescuer is lowered by helicopter, then lifted out with the patient – to bring him to a waiting ambulance. The hiker was suffering from head, neck and back injuries, according to SAR.

The call took about five hours.
