Kent Institution in Agassiz has seized $115,000 worth of contraband from the maximum security prison, including cell phones, SIM cards and drugs.
On Feb. 24, around 8 p.m., staff seized a package of contraband and unauthorized items at Kent Institution. The package included two cell phones and chargers, multiple SIM cards, USB readers and MicroSD cards.
It also contained 111 grams of methamphetamines, as well as just over 136 grams of other drugs and tobacco. The prison estimated the institutional value of the seizure at $115,000.
The Correctional Service of Canada said the police have been notified, and the institution is investigating.
A release from corrections said that it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering its prisons, including ion scanners and drug-detecting dogs to search buildings, inmates, visitors and personal property.
