The medium security unit at Mission Institution is now in a lockdown and all visits have been suspended.
The lockdown began on Jan. 11 at 8 a.m. to enable staff to conduct an exceptional search. An exceptional search is a non-routine search conducted when there is reasonable grounds to believe that there may be contraband in the institution.
According to Correctional Services Canada, the search was ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff, and inmates.
Normal operations will resume as soon as it is considered safe to do so. CSC also works in partnership with police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.
