The goal for any transit system is to get people to use it in large numbers.

To do that, more riders are urging transit agencies to make taking a bus more attractive.

One way to do that is to provide better conditions for people who are waiting for a bus.

If you’ve ever passed by a bus stop and seen a rickety chair placed there because there’s no bench, then you’ll know how some riders need a place to sit while waiting.

Or riders huddling under umbrellas because there’s no shelter.

To deal with this – and encourage more bus users – the City of Mission is adding more benches and shelters at BC Transit bus stops.

The contract with the city’s current provider for street furniture, including benches and shelters, has ended. The city, through a competitive process, selected Pattison as the provider of the street furniture for the new contract.

According to the contract, in the first year there will be 16 shelters and 20 benches installed. The list of locations is still being finalized with the contractor. There will be new bus and bench infrastructure added each year of the contract. The number of benches in year five will be 30.

“The current contractor has started to remove infrastructure earlier than anticipated and we are in the process of confirming with Pattison their installation schedule,” reads a statement with the city. “Some locations will require concrete and electrical work, which will be completed prior to the installation.”

It should also be noted that the city also has several shelters that are owned by the city that are outside of this contract. These shelters will not be changing, but they may be changing locations, said the city.
