Mission council to examine expansion of activity centre

More space needed for senior and community programming.

Mission council will meet Monday at city hall to discuss the possible expansion of the Mission Activity Centre to allow more space for seniors and community programs.

Could an expansion to the Mission Activity Centre solve the growing need for more space for seniors.

A staff report, that will be presented before council on Monday, suggests that a qualified consulting firm be hired to inspect and evaluate the possible expansion in order to provide more space for both community and seniors’ programs.

The firm would provide recommendations and a budget for the proposed expansion. A budget of $7,500 has been requested to perform the study.

The report also suggests that a community working group be created to work with district staff and the consultant.

The need for a permanent Seniors’ Centre in Mission has been ongoing for the past several years. In 2012, the Seniors’ Centre Task Force was created to help identify a possible site for a permanent centre.

One of the challenges has always been financing such a large project. Renovating the existing centre could be a less expensive opportunity.

If council agrees to hire a consulting firm, then the facility could be expanded to approximately 929 square meters (10,000 square feet).
