Mission folk fest gala concert kicks off event

The Sweet Lowdown, Vou, True Blues with Guy Davis and Corey Harris, and Lemon Bucket Orkestra set to perform

A gala concert at the Clarke Theatre on July 24 will start off this year’s Mission Folk Music Festival.

Scheduled to perform at the event are The Sweet Lowdown, Vou, True Blues with Guy Davis and Corey Harris, and Lemon Bucket Orkestra.

The Sweet Lowdown is part of the festival’s North of 49 performers. The band has a passion for old-time music and sweet harmonies.

Fiji’s Vou is part of the Sounds of the World showcase. The eight-member band is led by Gina Janus-Spedding, a choreographer from B.C. Their vibrant music and high-energy dance will keep audiences entertained.

Guy Davis and Corey Harris are part of the True Blues line up. Davis is a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. His diverse music can be playful or soulful.

Harris is a powerful singer and accomplished guitarist, and has toured with other well-known musicians, such as BB King, Taj Mahal and Tracy Chapman.

The Lemon Bucket Orkestra is a 16-member Canadian band featured in the Balkan Roots category.

The Mission Folk Music Festival takes place July 25-27 at Fraser River Heritage Park. Performers scheduled for the main stage are Vou, Zakiya Hooker featuring Chris James, and Dulsori from Korea on Friday, The Sweet Lowdown, Fish and Bird, True Blues featuring Guy Davis and Corey Harris, Quaretetto Gelato, and Cuba’s Wil Campa y su Orquestra on Saturday, and Lemon Bucket Orkestra, Good for Grapes, Ruth Moody, and Ireland’s Dervish on Sunday.

There will also be a music procession and parade to the stage.

Main stage concerts begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, and 6 p.m. on Sunday.
