A man has been presented with a Mission Heritage Award for his efforts to redevelop an old building on 1st Avenue while maintaining the heritage character of the Mission downtown core.

Amid Mission’s Heritage Week, Ron Stefanucci was presented with a Heritage Award by Mayor Paul Horn at the start of council on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

“This is the first Heritage Award plaque for a building,” Horn said. “I believe that you have stimulated something we’ve wanted to see in our downtown for quite some time and we hope others will follow your lead.”

Stefanucci recently purchased the old Alanson Hardware Building at 33192 1st Ave., directly across the historic Mission post office. It was built in 1921 by Hope Alanson, who operated the business until his death in 1952.

Stefanucci’s architect followed Mission’s OCP for downtown design elements, and reinforced the traditional two-story wall facade of a front-facing retail shop of 1st Avenue, said Ken Hood, chair of the Mission Community Heritage Commission.

“It serves as an example of how an older building can be renovated while retaining and demonstrating a heritage character,” Hood said.
