Are you B.C.’s fastest skater?

Then test yourself at an upcoming even in Mission.

Speed Week challenges individuals throughout the province to race against the clock to claim the title of B.C.’s Fastest Skater.

The event takes places on Oct. 13 at the Mission Leisure Centre rink, starting at 4:30 p.m. All skater must register in advance at https://icereg.ca/#!/events/speed-week-with-mission-racers-speed-skating-club

The Mission Racers called the event a “friendly competition by racing a lap to see where they end up on the Speed Week leaderboard.”

This year’s recommended donation of $5 per lap will be going to Kidsport.

As a club we are excited to support an organization that has helped may of our skaters be able to participate in speed skating,” said Emily Barnsdale. “Speed skating is all about speed but also having fun. We know there are many fast skaters in our communities active hockey and figure skating programs and also recreational skaters. This is a great opportunity for local skaters to come race the clock to see how they rank both in Mission and throughout B.C. We also welcome local businesses to join or challenge by sending their representative to race on their behalf.”

Using a format similar to that used by the NHL Skills Competition, skaters race against the clock. Individual skaters will complete one lap of the track to claim the fastest time. Skaters will compete in their local community during Speed Week and their times will be compared against the times of skaters from across B.C. Results will be published here to crown the champions in the following categories:

3 – 5 years of age

13 – 15 years of age (separate for males or females)

6 – 9 years of age

16 – 18 years of age (separate categories for males or females)

10 – 12 years of age

19+ years of age (separate categories for males or females)

In order to participate you will need hockey or figure skates and a helmet which can be rented right at a Speed Week location. You will also be required to wear your own hockey gloves or borrow cut proof gloves at a Speed Week location.
