Mission residents can now drop off used oil, antifreeze, oil filters and containers free of charge at the Mission Recycling Depot at 7229 Mershon Street, seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The program is for residential quantities only with a limit of 30 litres of oil per resident per visit.

Commercial operations and anyone with large quantities of used oil or antifreeze can find a collector for free pickup on the BC Used Oil Management Association’s website bcusedoil.com.

In April of 2017, the Mission Record published a story regarding the lack of places to recycle used motor oil in Mission.

At that time, both Canadian Tire and Lordco had ended their local recycling programs leaving Mission residents no options to dispose of used oil except to drive it out of town.

The District of Mission’s website, at that time, said “We apologize for the inconvenience this temporary service gap is causing and are working on resolving the issue.”

The issue has now been addressed.

Used oil and antifreeze collection is a covered by a stewardship program under the BC Recycling Regulation. It is funded through eco fees paid at the time of purchase. For more information, visit bcusedoil.com.
