Mission proposes to extend boundaries

The issue will go to referendum if 10 per cent of eligible voters lodge opposition with the municipality

An alternative approval process is being used to extend the district's boundaries by 60 acres on the south shore of Alouette Lake to accommodate a proposed Tim Horton Children's Foundation camp.

This method requires those opposed to the change to state their objection to municipal hall by Jan. 29, 2013 at 4 p.m. If at least 10 per cent of the eligible electors register their opposition, the issue will go to a referendum, otherwise the change can proceed.

According to the municipality, there are 25,391 eligible voters.

The suggested 150-acre Tim Horton campsite is currently between the District of Mission and the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). The access roads to the camp is within Mission, and working with one jurisdiction would make it easier for the foundation to apply for building permits, rezoning and other service requirements, such as emergency services. The FVRD supports the change.

The subject land is owned by Crown and was also referred to as Boulder Bay and used as a youth correctional facility until 2002. Since then, Mission has been looking at subleasing opportunities.
