Racers from around the region and the U.S. came to Mission this past weekend for the first race of the season.

The sounds of fast cars blazing down Mission Raceway Park's (MRP) drag strip were heard for the first time this season, as the Langley Loafers Oldtime Drags took place last weekend.

This is the first race of the season, due to months-long delays resulting from repairs to the track surface.

More than 200 cars came out Aug. 2-3 to try the new surface, with many making their best passes ever, according to MRP.

The AA Supercharged class was the most exciting of the weekend, with two of their racers setting both a new estimated time (ET) and mile-per-hour record.

Mike O'Connor set the new ET record, running 6.571 seconds at 209.3 MPH on Saturday. Mitch Chamberlin beat the current MPH record with a 6.755 at 211.46 MPH, followed by Troy Owen setting the new MPA record in the third qualifier with a 6.589 at 211.61 MPH.
