The Mission School District has put Cade Barr Elementary up for sale.

The quarter-acre property, located at 33447 Dewdney Trunk Road, has been owned by the district since 1948, but has not been in use since 2016.

The one-room school was last being used as a childcare facility, but has been empty over the last five years due to the dilapidated state of the building. The school itself closed in 1980.

“In February 2020, the school district finally received approval from the Ministry of Education to dispose of the property,” says a May 5 press release from SD75.

The building would require significant renovation and remediation to clear it of asbestos contamination – outweighing the benefits of preserving it for historical considerations.

This school is to be demolished this month, and the sale of the property is expected to be complete in June 2022, according to the school district, noting the funds will be used for future capital projects.
