Mission Secondary woodworking class receives $24,000 mill from city

A new portable saw mill was purchased for the school with profits from the Forestry Reserve

Mission Secondary School recently saw a new addition to its woodworking department. A new $24,000 portable saw mill was purchased for the school by the City of Mission with profits from the Forestry Reserve. The city presented the school with a large $24,000 cheque on Thursday (Dec. 15) and had an opportunity to start up the mill.

The new equipment will provide students with hands-on experience cutting lumber and an opportunity to work on special projects. The mill was assembled by a student named Campbell as part of his grade 12 capstone project under the guidance and direction of woodworking teacher Brad Unger.

Unger’s woodworking classes incorporate three to four weeks of curriculum to work with the mill and it has already provided several educational opportunities for local high school students. In addition to the purchase of the mill, Forestry has provided various sizes of local logs for the students to work with.

Earlier this month, $377,500 of Forestry Reserve profits were used to fund the purchase of a CT scanner at Mission Memorial Hospital.Since 1958, Mission has managed the Tree Farm License #26 and used timber harvesting profits to fund local community projects, including recent funding toward the Boswyk Seniors Centre and costs for the Centennial Park tree lighting.
