Escaped killer Shawn Merrick is back in custody.

On May 13, at about 11 p.m. Merrick was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large from a federal correctional facility.

Merrick escaped from Mission Minimum Institution (formerly known as Ferndale) on March 31. He is also alleged to have committed a string of robberies in Surrey and Langley while at large.

Merrick was captured without incident in the 21900 block of 44A Avenue in Langley.  Coordinated efforts between Langley RCMP, Surrey RCMP, Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team, Integrated Police Dog Services and Air 1 were instrumental in the safe apprehension of this wanted man.

Tips from the public also helped lead police to his location.

According to Surrey RCMP Inspector Manny Mann, once police confirmed Merrick’s location, the wheels were set in motion to take him into custody while minimizing the risk to the public and police.

Air 1 observed Merrick hiding on the roof of a residence as the various police units closed in. This is a great example of the cooperation and coordination between several police units in a multi-jurisdictional investigation said Mann.

Merrick has been transported back to prison to finish serving his sentence and has been charged for six new counts of robbery.

Police said viable tips they received will be provided to The Canadian Bankers Association, who had offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of Merrick.
