Pot plants found in Mission industrial park

A routine building inspection uncovered over 1,000 marijuana plants growing in a warehouse in the River Road industrial park last week.

Under the Fire Services Act, inspectors are mandated to examine commercial buildings on a regular basis. Depending on the type of occupancy, properties are usually checked every six to 12 months, said Mission Fire/Rescue Chief Ian Fitzpatrick.

Inspectors couldn’t contact the owners after several attempts and stepped onto the premises with the help of a locksmith and RCMP under the FSA.

Investigators found two separate rooms with marijuana plants. There were some electrical concerns and hydro to the building was disconnected. After determining there was no further imminent danger to the building, fire officials turned the building over the the RCMP.

Local Mounties secured the building and seized the plants after obtaining a search warrant.Teens arrestedThree teenagers were arrested after police spotted a stolen vehicle near Mission Secondary School March 15.

Police parked at a “hot spot” for crime when they saw a suspicious car with young kids. An officer tried to pull over the green Eagle Vision near Horne Street and Ito Avenue, but the car sped away.

Mounties located the vehicle behind the high school as the three occupants attempted to flee. Two were immediately taken into custody, while the driver ran into the school. Police gave chase, and the suspect was arrested after running into other police officers already in the school.

The driver, who is a minor and cannot be named, was charged with possession of stolen property, dangerous driving and theft. He was also involved in a police pursuit in Chilliwack eight days before his Mission arrest. The other two teens were released to their guardians.
