An artist’s rendering shows the new pedestrian bridge connecting Abbotsford University District with the city’s core, which is slated for completion by August 2018.

The City of Abbotsford is now fielding proposals for the new piece of public art that will adorn the new Salton Road overpass.

The overpass, will provide a link over the highway for cyclists and pedestrians, and is expected to be built this year. Abbotsford has a long-standing policy that requires one per cent of all capital projects go towards public art, and the city is now accepting applications for a $57,000 piece to adorn the new bridge.

The process is open to professional artists and artists team. While early artistic renderings of the bridge depicted a green wave featuring lit-up stars decorating the span, the actual final art piece will be decided through a request for proposals process.

The entire overpass project has a completion date set for August.
