Mission’s Opening Nite Theatre is bringing a comedy to the stage this Friday, Oct. 21 and running into November.
The Female of the Species by Joanna Murray-Smith is directed by Kaitlyn Busswood and stars a mix of familiar and new actors.
Anchoring the cast is Norma Rushton as Margot Mason, feminist icon and writer.
Deep in the throes of trying to start her new book, Margot is interrupted by Molly Rivers (played by Hazel Eason), a former student and disenchanted fan. What Margot assumed to be a visit from a fawning acolyte quickly reveals itself to be a hostage taking, and when Margot’s daughter Tess (Peanut White) shows up, things very quickly go off the rails.
Full of witty banter, bizarre plot twists and poor Margot chained to her desk with nothing but a drinks trolley within reach, The Female of the Species is a great show to go to with friends, a date, or your entire Women’s Studies class. With adult themes and strong language, this is not one for the kids, though.

Rounding out the cast are Derek Ward-Hall, Jim Anderson, and last year’s Fraser Valley Zone Festival Best Supporting Actor, Nate Drury.
Tickets are available via the Opening Nite Theatre website, openingnitetheatre.com or at the door. The show runs from Oct. 21 to Nov. 6 at the N. Railway theatre, running Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p,m, and Sundays at 2p.m.
