RCMP have confirmed a drowning on the weekend on the Chilliwack River.
Emergency crews, including Chilliwack River Valley Fire Department and BC Ambulance Service, responded to reports of a possible drowning near Chilliwack Lake Road and Slesse Road (close to Tamihi Creek Campground) around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 29.
Originally, The Progress reported it was a woman who was in the water, but RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Krista Vrolyk confirmed Tuesday (June 1) that it was a 33-year-old man who drowned.
According to witnesses, he was on a raft with others on the river when he went into the water. He was pulled out of the water by people on a raft, but it is not known if it was the same boat or a different one.
An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene and landed at Thompson Park. The helicopter was there for more than an hour before it left the location, but it is unknown if the man was airlifted to hospital.
