A cigarette heist, an impaired driver off the rails, and another senior scam were the highlights of Mission RCMP’s weekly (March 13-19) recap of crime in Mission.
Mission RCMP say a 74-year-old woman was scammed out of $1,500 last week after taking a call from someone impersonating a customer service employee from her bank.
The caller allegedly told the woman a suspicious transaction was being investigated and instructed her to contact their fraud department.
On a different line, someone asked the woman for her bank account information to help with the investigation.
Two withdrawals totalling $1,500 were later taken from her bank account.
“The public is encouraged to share this story with their friends and family members, to help prevent others from falling victim to this kind of scam,” said Mission RCMP media relations officer Harrison Mohr.

In another case overnight on March 13 and 14, a mall business on the 32500 block of Lougheed Highway suffered a break in.
Police say two men were captured with CCTV footage breaking into a vacant store with a shopping cart before busting through the drywall into the business next door.
The men allegedly stole cigarettes along with other items.
Mission RCMP say evidence is being gathered and an investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile on Saturday (March 18), trains were forced to stop in both directions near the railway crossing at Hawkins Pickle Road.
According to the RCMP, a 39-year-old man from Mission had his car stuck after driving between two sets of railway tracks.
The man registered a fail on a roadside screening device, received a 90-day driving probation and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
Police contacted the railway while the car was stuck and all trains in the area were halted for an extended period, including a nearby freight train.
Overall, Mission RCMP attended 247 calls from March 13-19.
Other notable cases included ATV mischief on the shores of Stave Lake, an impaired driver passed out in the driver’s seat on Lougheed Highway, and an arrest on an outstanding warrant.
