Mission can expect more wintery weather this weekend with snowfall and heavy freezing rain expected to hit the province.

Environment Canada issued another statement on Thursday (Dec. 22) warning of 15-25 cm of heavy snow along with freezing rain starting this evening through to Saturday (Dec. 24). The bitterly cold temperatures are expected to continue tonight (Dec. 22) as well, with wind chill values dropping as low as -25.

“Residents can prepare by ensuring nearby catch basins on the street are clear of debris and snow, making sure their yard and perimeter drains are functioning properly and testing sump pumps. Monitor basements and crawl spaces for water regularly,” the City of Mission said in a statement.

The city says sand and bags are available from public works at 33835 Dewdney Trunk Road.

According to Environment Canada, as freezing levels rise, heavy snow will become mixed with ice pellets and then switch to rain to Friday night to Saturday in the Fraser Valley. Strong easterly winds could lead to blowing snow and near zero visibilities.

Freezing rain is also predicted during the transition from snow to rain with periods continuing into Saturday afternoon. The inclement weather is expected to impact road and sidewalk conditions, as well as ice build up on trees leading to branches breaking.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” the Environment Canada weather warning advised. “Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

The City of Mission says residents who witness large amounts of pooling water can call Public Works’ 24-hour line at 604-820-3761 and advise them of the location and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure at 1-800-667-5122 for highways ponding.

For areas falling within the Fraser Valley Regional District, residents can call 778-704-0400.
