A local man has been charged with three robberies that include grabbing a purse from a senior woman with a cane in Abbotsford and holding up a small grocery store in Mission.
Tyson Zackary Fust, 22, of Mission has been charged with two counts of robbery, using an imitation firearm and disguising his face with intent to commit an offence in relation to those two offences.
The first incident occurred Dec. 21, when an 81-year-old woman was walking to her car after doing some Christmas shopping at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford.
The woman, who is under five feet tall and walks with a cane, was approached by a young man who asked her how she was doing.
As she proceeded to get into her vehicle, the man grabbed her purse out of her hands and ran to a waiting yellow sedan, where he jumped into the passenger seat. The vehicle sped off.
At the time, police said the victim was “severely traumatized” by the incident and was taken to hospital for examination.
Not long after, on Jan. 8, an armed robber walked into Mike’s Market, a community grocery store on Manson Street in Mission’s Hatzic Bench, and demanded cash.
The suspect, who was carrying a gun and a large bag, had his face concealed with sunglasses and a breathing mask.
Witnesses said the man had been driving a red Mazda pickup truck and had a woman with him. Police later recovered the truck, which had been stolen not far from the scene.
The thief was caught on camera in Mike’s Market during the robbery, and the clear image was circulated on the Internet.
Fust also faces charges of robbery and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose on Feb. 29 in Abbotsford.
On that day around midnight, a man robbed a pizza delivery driver of pizza and cash at knifepoint on Madeira Place in the Clearbrook area of Abbotsford.
In addition to being charged with these three robberies, Fust has also been charged with:
- possession of stolen property on Jan. 6 in Abbotsford;
- possession of property obtained by crime on Feb. 9 in Mission;
- taking a stolen vehicle on Feb. 23 in Abbotsford; and
- taking a stolen vehicle and possessing stolen property on March 3 in Abbotsford.
He also faces charges of breaching his bail and probation conditions.
Fust is next slated to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on March 18.
