A concussion grenade, a chainsaw, the emergency response team (ERT), the Integrated Police Dog Services (IPDS) and a police negotiator were all used on Saturday night to arrest a man who barricaded himself in a Mission home.

The incident began when the Mission RCMP prolific offender suppression team (POST) was trying to locate a man who was wanted by the Ridge Meadows RCMP for allegedly breaching his conditional sentence order.

POST located the suspect at a residence in the 9100 block of Clay Street in Mission.

The man, who is well known to police, responded by barricading himself in the residence and refusing to surrender.

Mission RCMP assessed the situation and requested the services of a police negotiator, along with the integrated ERT and the IPDS.

The man failed to leave the residence after several hours, and police obtained a warrant to enter the home. They used “breaching equipment” – a concussion grenade and a chainsaw – to do so.

With the help of the police service dog, the suspect was arrested.

The man currently remains in custody, and charges are pending.

A woman at the same location was also arrested for obstructing the police in their efforts to arrest the man. She was later released.

“Through the use of these specialized, skilled resources, Mission RCMP and their POST were able to secure the area, and arrest a wanted person, while protecting the community,” an RCMP press release says.
