The teenager accused of a violent assault on an elderly man in Abbotsford last year was convicted of a firearms offence in provincial court in Chilliwack on Thursday.

Brandon William Janveaux is the 19-year-old charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm for allegedly punching an elderly man in the face at a bus stop on Nov. 24, 2019.

A witness said Janveaux ran up to the old man and started “viciously punching him in the face repeatedly.”

While not even two years an adult, Janveaux was facing two other serious criminal matters already.

When he was 18, on Sept. 30, 2018, Janveaux was a passenger in his father’s red Camaro when he was pulled over doing 88 kilometres an hour (km/h) in a 50 km/h zone on Young Road in Chilliwack.

The younger Janveaux handed over a bag in which an officer found bear spray and a bag of marijuana. He also had knives, a black face mask and, most seriously, a .22-calibre rifle down his pants.

He was charged with occupying a vehicle knowing a firearm is present, possessing a firearm without licence or registration, and carrying a concealed weapon. A trial was scheduled on Jan. 16, but he pleaded guilty to the third charge and was sentenced to 18 months probation and handed a five-year weapons prohibition. The other charges were dropped.

Janveaux was in court on Dec. 20 for a bail hearing on the Abbotsford assault file, but bail was denied and he was detained.

He is next due in court Jan. 27.

He also faces a trial March 20, 2020 for two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of breaching his bail conditions on June 17, 2019 in Chilliwack.
